Really enjoyed preaching at Emmanuel Church, Marsham Street, Westminster yesterday and catching up with Pastor Bruce and Nicky Atkinson, friends of mine from our time St Aidan’s College, Durham University. I preached in the morning and led an “ask anything” Q and A after lunch. It was amazing to walk from Westminster Tube station, past the Houses of Parliament and find the former ‘Christian Science’ building just behind Westminster Abbey. Emmanuel Church bought it in the late 1990s and it’s huge. It’s a wonderful wood-panelled auditorium with several other halls, and a small garden. Lots of the congregation stayed for lunch and about half of them came to the seminar. It was great to minister with Bruce and Nicky, who were leaders at Kensington Temple in Notting Hill for about 30 years, before moving across London to Emmanuel. Seeing them brought back many happy memories. Bruce is an outstanding preacher, who I least heard at KT when I was on sabbatical in 2017. Also thrilled to meet Laurence Cook, an old friend from Christ Church London days.
