It was great being back at my home church Everyday Wimbledon on Sunday where I spoke 3 times in our Ephesians series on Ephesians 5:1-20. The talk involved a long anecdote about my insisting on swimming in the sea at least once a year off the UK coast. I also tried to recreate a “fragrant offering” in verse 2, and in the evening service I preached through the smoke I’d created on stage – I’m not sure it worked quite so well in the morning services, where the sticks I set fire to didn’t burn quite so well! I came close to idolatry in verse 5, with a makeshift shrine on the table next to me, featuring 3 little ‘gods.’ I landed in verse 20 with a long section on “giving thanks” and showed a video of Nick Vujicic, one of my heroes, an Australian evangelist born with no arms and no legs. The highlight for me was “giving thanks” standing next to our two older girls in the evening service in worship. It kind of feels like we’re now living in the future, with half our children now having finished Secondary School.
