104 people who told us they are not part of church nor part of the Christian Union prayed the salvation response prayer tonight at the Oxford Brookes University CU Carol Service at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. And an additional 18 people who are also not church nor CU, didn’t pray the prayer, but did say they’d like to know more. We had around 850 attend, so we were at full capacity with people standing. This was the result of some amazing hard work from Brookes CU and in particular Harry Parkin, who has been to Newday for years and who was on the team at Westpoint when I spoke there in August, and who I’ve been partnering with for some months leading up to the event. And also great leadership from Olly Landsdowne, who was President at Durham when I spoke in the Cathedral 3 years ago and is now UCCF staff worker in Oxford. The fact that both these guys knew me really helped build momentum into the event from the planning stage onwards. And Brookes CU put on a quality Carol Service, with the Oxford Nurses Training College choir quite outstanding. In the pulpit I could be seen by around 500 people, but we must have had at least 300 who couldn’t see me at all, and there were no TV screens, and around 250 people did not have comment cards at all, so the event exceeded all expectations. It was quite moving to talk to 1 or 2 church workers at the end who said they’d been praying for a breakthrough at Brookes for years, and that tonight went way beyond anything they’ve seen before in terms of the number of Brookes students who heard the gospel in one event. So a huge well done to the CU, who retired to UCCF HQ round the corner in Blue Boar Road for mulled wine and mince pies afterwards. Yet again this event demonstrated that with the right vision casting, anything is possible. I sat down with these guys in a field in September and told them their Carols could be mega and they took me seriously and went for it. For every 1 CU member, about 8 guests came. Fantastic. With enough planning and the right venue and lots of prayer anything is possible! Thanks be to God!
