I’m currently on the train home from Durham after a fantastic week. I’m delighted to say that we started at lunchtimes with a full venue and then got fuller. So today we had many students sitting on the floor as I spoke on the subject: “Cruel and Vindictive: How can a loving God send good people to hell?” As you can imagine it was a difficult talk to prepare, but the question time went much better than I could have expected given the emotionally charged and theologically troubling topic. The feedback at the end was very positive. There were 329 people there. Yesterday I spoke on: “Good for you, but not for me: Wasn’t Jesus just a moral teacher?” Let us just pause and reflect on the fact that in this country it is still possible to preach the gospel without any hinderance or interference in the student union building of one of our leading universities. I thank God that I live in a country where this is possible. Many Christians in other parts of the world would be amazed to enjoy such freedoms that people like me can easily take for granted. I also had a super meeting with Rev Andrew Sach from St. Helen’s Bishopsgate, London, who is one of a huge and very strong team we have had here.
