Can you go Through the Whole of 2011 Without Worrying?

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34 We are commanded not to worry. We are also commanded not to murder, steal and commit adultery. If Jesus commands us not to worry, then it must be possible to obey the command. It’s also a serious problem if we disobey the command. Why would Jesus command us not to worry if worrying was in fact acceptable to him. If Jesus thought worry was “OK and entirely understandable” he’d never have said this. So let’s start with why me worrying is a problem for Jesus. The answer is that worry is a sin. How come? Because when I worry, at the heart of it, is me thinking “I know how my life needs to go” or “I know what’s supposed to happen next in my life,” and “I know what’s best.” That’s me putting myself in the place of God. That’s me emotionally and mentally de-throning God, and usurping his position, and making Adrian Holloway God of Adrian Holloway’s life. In fact God knows how my life needs to go and He is in control. God is God, now me. So me not worrying isn’t just “a good New Year’s Resolution” it’s essential.
