25 salvation responses in Mayfair!

25 people who told us they are not part of any church, prayed a salvation response prayer when I spoke at a large Carol Service at St. George’s Church, Hanover Square in Mayfair today. Those who came all have some connection to the property business. Afterwards I chatted to surveyors, architects and to be honest it was an induction into the world of people buying and selling and developing huge properties in Central London. The spectacular building is the spiritual home of Handel’s Messiah, in as much as George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) was a regular worshipper at the church for the last 35 years of his life. Because of its Mayfair location it became the venue for numerous high society weddings. Percy Bysshe Shelley married Harriet Westwood there in 1814. Afterwards, in 1816 alone, 1,063 weddings took place in the church, including nine on Christmas Day! Future Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli married Mary Lewis there in 1839. Novelist George Eliot married John Cross there in 1880. Another Prime Minister Herbert Asquith married there 14 years later. Theodore Roosevelt, later 26th President of the United States of America, married Edith Carow there in 1886, after staying in Brown’s Hotel in Dover Street for the required period to enable him to marry in St. George’s. Pioneering aviator Amy Johnson married there in 1932. I could go on, but I realise not everyone’s as interested in history as I am! Anyway it was a fantastic answer to prayer today. Huge thanks also to my new friend Jonathan Hosker and the irrepressible Richard Dennis-Smith.
