Christmas in Scotland!

I spoke at two great Christian Union Carol Services in Edinburgh on Friday night. We had 200 or so at the first and 600 at the second.

We had very thick snow all around, but I flew up from Heathrow OK, and there was a fantastic atmosphere at St Cuthbert’s Church, a huge Church of Scotland building at the foot of Edinburgh Castle.

Five different university CUs came together to put on the event, and they reckoned that half the congregation were not normally church-goers.

The building itself was magnificent, and there was a large orchestra, and choir, a very good testimony and an enchanting solo (“O Holy Night”) just before I came on.

I was really flying during the talk. One of those times when you have an instant connection, and everything works perfectly. I was able to build a bridge and then take the gospel over it.

The response was done by response card. The cards were handed in at the end, and as I had to get home, I am writing this before I know how many ticked which boxes.

As I left the building to make my way to the train station, the atmosphere on Princes Street was magical. I’d never seen the Castle lit up at night before, and there was a huge fun fair right on Princes Street. The snow made it an even more romantic scene. They have proper snow clearing equipment up here and the banks of cleared snow were enormous.

So I was really glad I came. The apostle Paul asks the question: “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” And tonight hundreds heard, and many I am sure for the very first time that God is real and sent Jesus at Christmas that we might have a real loving relationship with a real God, who will forgive us all our sins, and give us his righteousness. I spoke a lot about peace with God, and I am convinced that British people are terribly stressed. We have the answer, “the prince of peace!”.
