At Sheffield University

What a privilege to be able to go into the Students Union building and talk about Jesus at the heart of Sheffield University this lunchtime. One Sikh student from Birmingham came up to me at the end and said that he didn’t know any Christians but had heard about the event on “give it a go!” which is the SU officers’ online attempt to encourage students to try new things. Fantastic! He asked me a question at the end of my “Is God a Kill Joy?” talk about an analogy I’d used from a football match on Clapham Common. It ended up with him asking whether he could go on an Alpha Course. I hadn’t suggested this, so it was hugely encouraging. And the CU events secretary immediately found details on his phone of the upcoming Alpha course at St Thomas Crookes. I did an earlier outreach talk in the same venue on “Wasn’t Jesus just a great moral teacher?” We had a question challenging the accurate transmission of Old Testament prophecies that led to me talking about the copy of Isaiah found in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which I saw on my visit to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem last year. Anyway, all in all we had two events which were well attended with lots of guests. Although I have played football against Sheffield University in the late 1980s, I’d never been on the campus before. By the way, I’m back in the Students Union tomorrow night for a meal with a message event, where I’ll speak on the title: “Is there more to life than this?”
